News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Summer hiking program is back

Summer is here, and that means hiking season is in full swing in the Central Oregon Cascades.

Three Sisters Fellowship is once again offering a schedule of group hikes that includes something for all ages. Kim Barry, coordinator of the program, has put together twelve different hikes to choose from between June 22 and August 25, ranging from an easy saunter into Hand Lake to summiting the South Sister.

"We have discovered over the years that many folks who have lived in Central Oregon for years have not ventured beyond the highway pull-offs to explore places like Black Crater, Koosah Falls or even Black Butte," said Barry.

A number of the hikes are kid-friendly, while others are much more demanding, according to Barry.

"There is nothing like sharing a day in the wilderness," she said. "It's a great way to get to know one another."

A 5.3-mile hike for all ages at Smith Rock kicks off the schedule on Friday, June 22. Hikers will meet at Three Sisters Fellowship, 442 Trinity Way, at 8:30 a.m., with plans to return by about 1:30 p.m. Carpooling is encouraged and a state park day pass is required for each vehicle.

There are no costs for any hikes, although some trailheads require a state parks pass or a Forest Service Trails Pass. Bring along water, food, sunscreen, bug repellant, extra clothing, camera and first aid kit. The hike leader will provide maps.

Dates and times of the hikes vary through the summer. Trips (in order) include Sahalie Falls, Black Butte, Mt. Washington wilderness, Canyon Creek Meadow, Sunshine Meadow, Hand Lake, Browder Ridge, Black Crater, Mathieu Lakes, Three Fingered Jack and the South Sister.

A copy of the full schedule with descriptions can be obtained at the Three Sisters Fellowship office Tuesday-Friday. Contact the church at 549-4184 or Kim Barry, 549-2934 for more information.
