News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
A passion for vintage cars can lead down many interesting roads. Some race them; many drive all over the country to show them off and talk to like-minded car buffs.
Bill Zilk and Steve McGhehey are building car condominiums in Sisters.
The partners in Classic Garage LLC are creating climate-controlled, insulated 12-by-20-foot homes for classic cars with a clubhouse and other amenities - a sort of exclusive resort for autos.
The project, located on Aylor Court, grew out of a mutual love for beautiful classic cars with lustrous paint and gleaming chrome - and delicate wood.
"I have a '47 Ford Woody," McGhehey said. "If you don't keep the temperature right, it's really hard on (them). They deteriorate."
Hence, heated, sealed, insulated units.
A car enthusiast could store the parts of a car in the new garage, but no restoration work will be allowed on site. The condo units are for sale or for rent.
The garage won't just be a place for cars to sit comfortably through a cold, wet winter. McGhehey and Zilk envision a kind of headquarters for car buffs, with a clubhouse for a gathering place. McGhehey hopes to host mini-show and shine events on the site.
"We're encouraging car clubs to have one of their members join, so they can have some of their small events here," McGhehey said.
The garage also features a heated wash rack.
"For car nuts, that's a big deal," McGhehey said. "You don't take classic cars to the car wash. It just doesn't happen."
There are 36 units on the site; at least 11 have been sold. McGhehey hopes to have the facility open September 1.
