News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Vandals strike Sisters' downtown area

Sisters residents woke Sunday morning to the unpleasant sight of graffiti scrawled on the walls of several businesses.

Someone painted a swastika on the door of Soba Noodles & Rice and a large swastika with the slogan "White Power" was sprayed on the back wall of the Hitchin' Post General Store.

The prominent graffiti was visible to any driver heading west up Cascade Avenue, but it didn't stay visible long.

"When I saw the graffiti on the Hitchin' Post, I was just sickened," said Libby Andresen. "I put a sheet over it as soon as I could. I didn't want one more person to see that and think that's what Sisters is about."

It is not clear whether the graffiti is actually ideological in nature or merely the work of vandals trying to use the most shocking and disturbing symbol they know.

At least one other building was similarly "tagged," and a Cloverdale area resident reported that a swastika was painted on his driveway the same night.

Brian Nye of Nye's Painting volunteered to paint over some graffiti with supplies provided by Jason McAfee of Hayden Homes.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office asks that anyone with information on the incident contact them at 693-6911.
