Outlaws football team wins league opener

Quarterback Jarred Hasskamp led the charge in the Outlaws' 33-13 victory at Junction City (JC), on Friday, September 21. Hasskamp completed 15 of 23 passes for 233 yards and threw four touchdown (TD) passes for the night.

The first quarter of the game proved to be a little tough for the Outlaws.

"We were playing a little out of sync," said Coach Bob Macauley. "We had a player called for illegal procedure three times, a touchdown called back out of the end zone and a play to the two-yard line called back. We had a total of six penalties and two turnovers in the first quarter. So, to be tied at 0-0 at the end of the first quarter felt pretty good."

Hasskamp got the Outlaws rolling in the second quarter with an 80-yard drive that consisted of 13 plays. The drive ended with a 12-yard pass to Nate Jackson for the touchdown. Tanner Hodges kicked the extra point, and Sisters took a 7-0 lead.

The Tigers took possession, but the Outlaws defense held strong. Carroll Gryder intercepted the ball and ran it back 14 yards for Sisters. The Outlaws went on a 63-yard, eight-play drive. The key play in the drive was a 28-yard reception by Gryder. Cory McCaffrey ran it in eight yards for the touchdown behind the blocking of Evan Eady and Tyson Edmunson. The extra point was blocked. Sisters extended their lead to 13-0.

JC answered back with a good drive, and the Tiger tailback scored from 18 yards out. JC narrowed the Outlaws lead to 13-7 with 1:50 left on the clock.

Hasskamp engineered what Macauley said the team calls a two-minute, no-huddle drill. Hasskamp completed four of six passes, including a 19-yard TD to Gryder with 30 seconds left in the half. The Outlaws' two-point conversion attempt failed, and Sisters headed into the half with a 19-7 advantage.

The Outlaws went 70 yards in nine plays on their first drive of the third quarter. Hasskamp threw an 11-yard pass to McCaffrey for the TD to cap the drive. Hodges kicked the extra point, and Sisters pulled to a 26-7 lead.

The Outlaw defense continued to play exceptional football. In the next series Chad Kernutt led the defensive assault and sacked the Tiger quarterback.

"He (Chad) was a thorn in their (the Tigers) side all night," said Macauley.

Sisters eventually pushed to a 33-7 lead, and the offense ran down the clock to end the game.

Macauley said the entire defense played great team ball and noted specific stand outs. Kernutt (defensive tackle) led the team with nine tackles and a sack. Taylor Davenport recorded nine tackles and had a great offensive game as well. Nate Emberton finished the night with nine tackles and, according to Macauley, had his best game of the year. Marcus Gaboni played an extremely strong game at defensive end and recorded five tackles and what the Outlaws call 'four hurries on the quarterback.' Gryder recorded seven tackles and an interception.

Macauley also said that Lucas Rietmann and Levi Goins played an excellent game as well.

"Levi was all over the field and instrumental in pass defense especially," said Macauley.

The Outlaws will host Stayton in a non-league game at home on Friday, September 28. The following week the Outlaws travel to Marist. Sisters is 1-0 in league and 4-0 overall.
