Boys soccer team ends week with a win

The boys soccer team pulled off a 3-0 win over the Elmira Falcons at home on Thursday, October 4.

Eight minutes into the game Evan Sims made a solid low pass to Levi Rowe who booted it in for the goal from just inside the 18-yard box. Two minutes later Max Greuttner passed it off to Gaelan DeLeon. DeLeon put it in with a powerful shot with his left foot for a hard finish into the net, and the Outlaws took a 2-0 lead.

At the 17-minute mark David Liming stole the ball from a Falcon defender. Liming took a couple of dribbles, made a great move and punched in a solid shot from 15 yards out. At the half Sisters held a 3-0 advantage, which carried them through the scoreless second frame.

Coach Rob Jensen said: "We got comfortable with the lead and then didn't have the same intensity and aggressiveness we'd had earlier."

Two days earlier the Outlaws lost 1-2 at Cottage Grove (CG) on an artificial turf field under the lights.

Jensen said: "It was a unique experience. The turf makes play fast, but our team plays well on a fast surface. CG is a very good team, and even though we lost I think this was the best game we've played all year. I think the game could have gone either way."

For the first 25 minutes of the game, both teams played very well, and the game stood at 0-0. In the 29th minute CG scored on a cross that got through the Outlaw defense and held a 1-0 lead entering the half.

With 15 minutes left in the game, the Outlaws were called for a penalty in the box. CG scored and extended their lead to 2-0.

At that point Sisters added a forward, started to attack more and controlled the ball on Cottage Grove's side of the field. After some rough play, DeLeon was tackled in the box and Cottage Grove was called for a penalty. Wil Newport's shot for the Outlaws was good, and Sisters closed the Lion lead to 2-1.

Both teams had a few more opportunities to score, but time ran out on the clock before either team could capitalize, and Cottage Grove walked away with a 2-1 win.

Jensen told The Nugget that Kanoa James played a great game at goal and Slater Smith (sweeper) shut down one of the tougher forwards in the league.

Sisters is 2-2 in league and 2-5 overall.
