Girls soccer team suffers two losses

The girls soccer team lost 1-3 in overtime against the Pleasant Hill Billies on Monday, October 1.

The Lady Outlaws jumped out quick and at the four minute mark took a 1-0 lead. Katie Taylor dribbled in and took a beautiful shot that went to the left of the keeper for the goal.

Sisters controlled the game the remainder of the first half on the Billies' home field. The Outlaws had three clear opportunities at shots on goal with no keeper in sight but were unable to finish. Entering the half Sisters held a 1-0 lead.

The Billies scored in the 68th minute to tie the game 1-1.

"It was a beautiful shot over our keeper's head," said Coach Nik Goertzen, "but it caught us a little off guard."

The score remained tied through the end of regulation play, and the game went into two 10-minute overtimes.

The Billies took charge in overtime. Halfway through the first half PH scored to take a 2-1 lead. Sisters had at least six opportunities to score but just couldn't get it into the back of the net.

"In the second overtime I made some line-up changes but we were flat and a step short," said Goertzen.

With four minutes left PH scored again to extend their advantage to 3-1 which took the wind out of the Outlaws' sails.

Goertzen said: "We should have closed them (PH) out today, but for some reason we play down to our opponent's ability. We beat ourselves today. In my opinion we didn't come ready to give the effort needed to win."

Three days later the Lady Outlaws lost 0-6 at home against Marist.

Marist scored just 19 seconds into the game, and Goertzen told The Nugget that his team just stood there.

"No one took responsibility, and from then on we were in shock mode and chase mode for the rest of the game.

The Spartans scored two more goals to take a 3-0 lead at the half and then scored three more in the second half to secure the win.

"Marist is a very good team, and they outplayed us," said Goertzen. "But we really are a better team than what we're showing."

The Outlaws are currently 5-3-1 in league play.
