News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

New pharmacist mans counter at Sisters Drug Co.

Folks who use the services of Sisters Drug Co. are being greeted by a smiling new face behind the pharmacy counter.

Jenny Murphy took over this month as the new managing pharmacist at the venerable Sisters pharmacy. Tim and Deanna Muir sold the store to Pill Box Drugs, based in Vancouver, Washington, a year ago. Tim Muir remained a fixture behind the counter as the search went on for a new pharmacy manager.

It took a year before serendipity took a role and brought Murphy through the door.

"They were having a hard time filling this job, and I came along and was looking for this kind of job, so it worked out really well," Murphy said.

Murphy is a native of Central Oregon. She graduated from Mountain View High School in Bend in 1999 and earned a degree in biological sciences in 2003 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She went on to get her doctorate in pharmacy at the University of the Pacific in 2006 and moved back home.

"I just moved to town and looked at a couple of pharmacies, and this just happened to open up," she said.

Murphy is working full-time behind the counter; Muir is there part-time as the transition is made.

Murphy is enthusiastic about her new role and is excited about working in a community pharmacy. As part of her new role, she is working on "community-friendly" pricing on over-the-counter medications.

She also plans to be actively engaged with her clients.

"I'm always here, so they can call me with any questions they may have," she said.

Murphy's outgoing nature is instantly apparent - and it makes pharmacy a good fit for her interests and personality. She discovered that during her college career.

"I love science, and I just really like working with people," she said. "I didn't want to go into research, and I didn't want to be a physician, so this (pharmacy) was a great opportunity."
