Outlaws pound Elmira on gridiron

Cory McCaffrey passed the 7,000-yard rushing mark in Friday's win over Elmira at home on October 19. Only 32 players in the history of high school football have crossed that mark.

McCaffrey made 14 carries for 194 yards and three touchdowns in the Outlaws' win over the Falcons.

Coach Bob Macauley told The Nugget that a lot of credit for McCaffrey's success goes to the Outlaws offensive line: Emery Meyer; Evan Eady; Tyson Edmunson; Thomas Arends; Andrew Enger; and Tyler Miller.

The Outlaws jumped out to a quick start and on their first drive went 64 yards in five plays. Dominic Nieri ran 20 yards for the touchdown (TD). The extra point attempt failed. Sisters got the ball back and in four plays went 61 yards for the TD. McCaffrey ran 34 yards to score, the extra point was good and Sisters went up 13-0 to close the first quarter.

At the start of the second quarter, Sisters went 85 yards in five plays. The big play of the drive was a 34-yard TD reception by Nieri. Tanner Hodges' kick for the extra point was good, and the Outlaws extended their lead 20-0.

With 9:43 left in the second quarter, Hodges intercepted the ball, and the Outlaws regained possession. On the very next play Hodges caught a 43-yard pass from Jarred Hasskamp for the TD. Sisters pushed to a 26-0 advantage.

Before the horn sounded to end the half, the Outlaws went 70 yards in four plays for a TD. McCaffrey ran it in from the 15-yard line, the extra point was good and Sisters entered the half with a 33-0 lead.

The Outlaws took the kickoff to start the third quarter and went 65 yards. McCaffrey capped the drive with a 19-yard TD behind the blocking of Miller and Enger. Hodges' kick was good, and Sisters took a commanding 40-0 lead.

Elmira had some good drives and scored midway through the fourth quarter. The game ended in a 47-8 victory for the Outlaws.

"We played about everybody all night," said Coach Macauley. "A lot of kids got playing time."

Hasskamp completed eight of 13 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

"Jarred not only threw well but was a good leader on the field and took control of the game," said Macauley.

Macauley noted a few Outlaw standouts.

"Nate (Jackson) is doing an outstanding job for us on offense. He had two receptions for 31 yards and rushed once for 23 yards. We're looking for good things from him as we get ready for Cottage Grove. I'm particularly pleased with the physical play of Evan (Eady) and Tyler (Miller) on the offensive line."

Nieri notched two touchdowns on offense and also recorded nine tackles on defense. Carroll Gryder at corner finished the night with six tackles.

Macauley also told The Nugget he was impressed with Shawn Tosello, who recorded nine tackles on the night.

Hodges continues to be a key player for the Outlaws and recorded two receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown.

On Friday, October 26, the Outlaws will match up against Cottage Grove (CG) in their biggest game of the year. CG is currently ranked eighth in the state and is just coming off a win over fifth-ranked Gladstone. CG boasts players who are big, strong and physical. If Sisters can earn the win they will wrap up the Big Sky Championship; a loss would put Sisters in a three-way tie with Cottage Grove and Marist.
