Windstorm pummels Sisters

A powerful wind storm downed several trees in Sisters in the early morning hours on Friday, knocking out power and cable service to much of downtown.

Power had been restored to all but a few businesses in Sisters at about 11 a.m.

A large ponderosa pine tree was uprooted and fell on a house on Washington Avenue. According to neighbors the tree fell on the bedroom of a teenage girl. The girl was away from home, spending the night at the house of a friend. There were reportedly no injuries.

According to Central Electric Cooperative spokesman Allan Guggenheim, power was knocked out to approximately 300 accounts when a tree fell across power lines at the corner of Main Avenue and Larch Street, at 4:45 a.m. BendBroadband cable service was also brought down.

A cottonwood tree fell on wires behind the Depot Deli knocking out power to the restaurant for several hours.

The early morning gusts that hit close to 40 miles per hour were just the culmination of a couple of days of blustery conditions that stripped many golden leaves from aspens and poplars in the Sisters area and pushed around anything that wasn't bolted down - and some things that were.

The wind knocked over the tent covering the deck at Bronco Billy's Ranch Grill & Saloon, but it was about the time the owners have it removed anyway.

Elsewhere in Sisters, homeowners looked with chagrin at the gutters they just cleaned for the rain - filled again to overflowing with windblown pine needles.
