News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Caldera, the Sisters-area arts center, will present the work of six artists from across the country in its first of three Saturday community art events. The January Artist Salon, which is free to the public, will be held at Caldera's Arts Center at Blue Lake on Saturday, January 26, at 1 p.m.
This first event in the Winter Salon Series showcases works in progress by two dancers, two writers and two visual artists.
Bobby Abrahamson is a documentary photographer, filmmaker and media educator chronicling a new autobiographical project entitled "Rabbit: A Photographer's Journal." Katherine Behrend of Seattle and Pennsylvania-based Kilian Kröll choreograph their "movement conversation" and examine the personal relationships people have with the planet.
From Kennewick, Washington, Carly Furry and her collection of family-based short stories, "Country of Origin," survey interpersonal relationships and wild places. Local poet John Martin explores the human condition with imagery from the natural world. Ryan Pierce's paintings and sculpture focus on the role of contemporary mythic figures in the cultural justification of political violence.
In addition to its primary year-around programs for youth, Caldera offers fully underwritten retreats for artists. The program provides the gift of time and place for professional artists to do creative work. The artists, selected by application, are given a private cottage and studio or work space at Caldera's Art Center.
Caldera's second Artist Salon on February 23, at 1 p.m., features the work of filmmakers, dance artists and writers, while ceramic artists, painters and poets exhibit at Caldera's final Winter Salon on Saturday, March 15.
Caldera's Hearth Art Center at Blue Lake is located at 31500 Blue Lake Dr., just west of Black Butte Ranch on Highway 20; take the Suttle Lake/Camp Davidson turnoff, US Forest Service Rd. #2070.
