Desert Charm opens in Sisters

Sisters' reputation as a focal point for fiber arts has expanded yet again with the opening of Desert Charm.

The store is co-owned by sisters Bobbi and Tami Merritt and carries locally produced wool, alpaca and llama fiber for spinning, weaving or felting. Imported fibers are also available, including Australian Merino wool, camel, silk, cotton, bamboo and hemp.

Bobbi owns a "spinners flock" of sheep, comprised of Border Leicester and California Red ewes. Tami is a jewelry designer who creates wire-wrapped jewelry. Both women are members of the High Desert Wool Growers and will be teaching classes on spinning, felting, knitting and crocheting.

Their approach to fiber art is to see wool as a very forgiving medium. "It's like moldable clay. When you felt it, you go from flat objects to three-dimensional to wherever your imagination leads you," said Bobbi.

Purses, bowls, toys, hats, beads for jewelry making and scarves are created from washed, minimally processed fiber. "Everything from utilitarian to wall art," said Bobbi. Students of all experience levels are welcome. Some may need help with technique, while others may need guidance on design and composition.

Creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a fiber festival is one of the Merritts' goals for the store. All the ready-to-knit yarn is locally handspun. There is a work area at the back of the store available for casual use by customers. Garments and gift items crafted by local artists are displayed and for sale.

Two brands of spinning wheels are available at Desert Charm, and both may be rented or practiced on in-store prior to purchase. Ashford wheels are made in New Zealand, and Louet manufactures its wheels in the Netherlands.

Both women agree that it's better to learn to spin in a small group setting. It can be a frustrating skill to acquire, and the temptation to throw the wheel out the window is very strong. Working in a group soothes the temper and allows the hands and feet to find their coordination in a rhythm that, when mastered, becomes creative therapy.

Desert Charm is holding a grand opening celebration on Friday, January 18, from 2 to 7 p.m. The store is located at 123 E. Hood Ave. For more information call 549-8479.
