Fire district honors Remund family

Folks in the far northern corner of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District like the security provided by the fire station at Squaw Creek Canyon Estates.

Last weekend, the fire district honored the family who made it possible to station firefighting equipment in the area, where it can quickly respond to wildfires and other emergencies.

In June of 1992, a devastating fire swept through the area north of Sisters, across Sno-Cap Vista and Squaw Creek Canyon Estates. In 1994, to protect against such fires, developer Ron Remund and his wife Barbara donated the property at 17233 Buffalo Dr. in Squaw Creek Canyon Estates to the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District for a fire station.

In March 1999 Remund's dream of having a fire station to protect the community he developed became reality with the dedication of the Squaw Creek Canyon Substation #703.

"We had never really formally recognized the Remund family for their generous donation," said Sisters Fire Chief Tay Robertson.

On Saturday, the district dedicated a bronze plaque at the substation to complete that formal recognition.

Ron Remund died late last year, but Robertson noted that "we did get a chance to talk with him and show him what we were doing."

The ceremony drew fire district members and many local residents.

"It was a very impressive turnout, and it was great to see the community gather at the fire station," Robertson said.
