News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Cascade Horizon Band (CHB), under the direction of Sue Steiger, will return to Sisters High School auditorium at 3 p.m., Saturday, January 19, for the first of two performances of its Fifth Annual Winter Concert.
The presentation will be repeated Sunday, January 27, at 3 p.m., at Bend High School. Both programs are free to the public.
CHB's winter program will feature a variety of popular concert band music, including Big Band sounds of the '40s and '50s, marches, Dixieland, Broadway show tunes, classical numbers and a salute to America's veterans.
Cascade Horizon Band has grown from 12 to 65 members in its five-year existence and has given more than 55 free performances since its inception.
The band is affiliated with the International New Horizons Band program, which began 14 years ago at Eastman School of Music to provide senior musicians an opportunity to participate in musical performance groups. More than 140 concert bands and orchestras now are part of the program, including five other groups in Oregon.
Most of the members of Cascade Horizon Band range in age from 50 to 86 years, with a few members considered to be seniors in training who are in their 40s.
Three Sisters residents play in the band: Don Oliver, baritone, is one of the original 12 members; Tom Worcester, French horn, is a four-year veteran; and Bob Seltzer, clarinet, joined last August.
