News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
On a sunny Saturday at Mt. Bachelor, three Sisters High School alpine ski racers managed to secure state championship berths in the third and final Giant Slalom of the season.
A flawed first run left Lucas Rietmann in jeopardy of elimination, but a strong fifth place second run clinched the first place individual men's transfer position to the state high school championship.
Summit High School's Graham Miller secured the second and last position edging out Sisters Jordan Rudinsky, who missed one race with a schedule conflict.
Behind Rudinsky were Andrew Enger, Steven Enger, Max Gruttner, Davis Rapp and Scott Everson, respectively.
On the women's roster Sisters skier Jenna Sneva smoked the field of ladies by more than five seconds to secure the first place individual position, while Ali Wimer (also from Sisters) placed second in the individual points standing, allowing her to attend the state championship.
Behind Sneva and Wimer were Sisters racers Haley Hancock, Bethany Bachman, Isabelle Mettler, Maria Rosche and Tori DeLeone.
Only the season ending slalom is left on the league schedule, and Sisters is equally well positioned to take additional racers in that discipline.
"Of the two men and two women individuals left to be allocated," said Coach Todd Williver, "I see a real potential for Sisters to take an additional three or even all four."
Williver points to Sneva's outstanding season as a near lock for first place girls and says the second place is up for grabs among Bachman, Hancock and Wimer.
On the men's side Rudinsky, Rietmann, both Engers, Mtn. View's Ian Bristow and Logan Frankenberger and International School of the Cascades Graham Miller all have numerical possibilities, depending on their performances on Saturday.
