Blust second, boys third at Nordic meet

Molly Blust finished second in the combined results of the Oregon High School Nordic State Championships held Friday and Saturday, February 22-23, at Mount Bachelor.

Blust, a junior, finished second in Friday's 5-kilometer classic race (18:04) and followed up with another second-place finish in Saturday's 7.5-kilometer freestyle race (23:53) to complete her runner-up honors behind Summit's Bella Smith, who won handily on both days.

Blust's heroics weren't quite enough to help her team earn a trophy as the Outlaws finished fourth with 88 points behind Summit (20), Redmond (62) and Crescent Valley (80). Bend was one point behind Sisters (89), and Corvallis placed sixth (166).

Jena Rickards wound up 12th in the overall standings, after finishing 16th on Friday (20:19) and 10th (26:04) on Saturday. Janelle Hjelmstad and Erin Kanzig placed 28th and 29th respectively in the overall standings, while Rachel Sims ended up 35th.

The boys team used tight packing to pick up a third-place team trophy with 83 points behind Summit (15) and Redmond (53).

Nick Rice (17:49), Wes Ford (17:49) and Mike Calavan (17:58) paced the Outlaws as scorers on day one, and Luke Glick (23:02), Ford (23:03) and Rice (24:22) earned the points on Saturday.

In the overall results Jack Yinger placed 30th, Seth Schneider 33rd, Alex Yinger 34th, Nick Anthony 36th, Andy Thomas 38th and Jake Lasken 39th among 54 competitors.

Said Coach Tom Blust: "This was our first year skiing in the OHSNO league, and I think it was a real eye-opener for the kids skiing against this level of competition." (Summit has nine skiers who qualified for the Junior Nationals in Anchorage next month).

"I was extremely pleased with the determined effort put in by the boys team with strong showings by Wes Ford, Luke Glick, Nick Rice and Mike Calavan putting them in third overall. The girls gave it their all and should be proud of their fourth-place overall standing."

When asked to comment on his daughter's accomplishments, Blust said, "Molly continues to amaze me with her gutsy performance."
