News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Loren Johnson went to be with the Lord on February 29. Although his death was a tragic and unexpected accident, he lived his life to the fullest to the very end. He died doing what he loved to do: working outside on his home.
He was born on January 14, 1931, in Redlands, California, to Hennes and Edith Johnson, where he grew up and attended school. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, then moved to Oregon, the state he dearly loved. He married Betty Talburt on December 18, 1964, and together they raised four children in Roseburg.
Loren was very active in the logging and timber business, which he retired from in 1993. He shared many good times with his family camping, fishing and hunting. He loved watching his kids and grandkids play sports or perform in dance or piano recitals.
Loren didn't know a stranger and made sure to keep in contact with friends and family. He had a fondness for animals, especially his mini dachshunds. He felt so blessed to be able to retire with good health and live at Black Butte Ranch in Central Oregon and enjoyed many years of making wonderful friends and golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, his children and their spouses: Tim and Robyn Gwaltney; Craig Gwaltney; Kristin and Juan Yraguen; and Kimberly Johnson. He is also survived by sons from a previous marriage: Gary; David; Kerry; and Eddie. Seven grandchildren: Caleb Gwaltney; Boni, Arie and Carson Yraguen; Paul and Kendra Johnson; and Jane Kellum. His sister Belva Sanders and her husband Merle and their children and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. He is also survived by his aunt Dorthy Nordling.
A memorial service was held to celebrate his life on Tuesday, March 4, at the Camp Sherman Community Center, in Camp Sherman, and his funeral will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 11 a.m., at the Chapel of the Roses in Roseburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made to Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center, 943 Del Rio Rd., Winchester, Oregon.
Redmond Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
