News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Restaurant open house draws crowd

There was a packed house at Pleiades on Thursday night - and Sisters' newest restaurant wasn't even serving dinner.

Hundreds of Sisters area residents turned out for an open house just to see the new restaurant at FivePine and to tour the upstairs professional offices and check out the changes at the adjacent Sisters Athletic Club.

Not that anyone went hungry. There were plenty of hors d' oeuvres, and wine flowed freely. There was a palpable sense of excitement.

"Everyone is anxious for (the restaurant) to open up," said one partygoer. "They've heard so much about it."

The restaurant is scheduled to open on Saturday, March 8, if all inspections are completed.

Builder Ken Yopp was on hand to describe some of the unique construction features that grace the restaurant. Most prominent of these is a light feature depicting the constellation from which the restaurant takes its name. On a soffit supported by carved pillars is a black sky punctuated by "stars" made by pinpoints of light.

"We actually took a picture of the constellation Pleiades and laid it out on the sheetrock (ceiling), and the electrician drilled all the holes (in the location of the stars)," Yopp explained.

Halogen lights behind the screen create the effect of stars.

The feature was designed and largely built by Yopp's employee Don Hundt.

One of the items of conversation that floated around the room was the correct pronunciation of the constellation and restaurant: PLAY-dees - as in "platies of food," as one partygoer explained.

The open house included the offices of Therapeutic Associates and Ponderosa Family Chiropractic directly above the restaurant and accessible by elevator.

A covered breezeway bridges the restaurant and the adjacent Sisters Athletic Club, and visitors toured the new configuration at the gym. An entirely new "cardio" room features new equipment. The move to a separate cardio room leaves more space in the weight room for weight equipment, which is still being added in.

A work party late last month got a major workout moving equipment upstairs at the club and from one end of the weight room to another.

Those in attendance were unanimous in their praise for the restaurant and for the combination of service offered at FivePine. The campus now houses a lodge and conference center, rental cabins, Sisters Movie House, Shibui Spa, Sisters Athletic Club and many professional offices. It will soon also feature a brewpub.

"It's a great addition to this town," said Bobb Carlsmith. "Also, it's a great party.
