News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Richard "Dick" Hogan, of Palo Alto, California, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2008, at Stanford Hospital with his family at his side. He was 85 years old. Dick Hogan has been a summertime resident of Camp Sherman since 1950.
Born January 25, 1923, in San Carlos, Negros, Philippine Islands, to Curt Leland Hogan and Elizabeth Mumaw Reed, Dick spent his childhood years in the Philippines. In 1938, he and his parents moved to the San Francisco Bay area. After graduating from Sequoia High School, he enlisted in the US Navy in 1942.
He served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve until 1983 when he retired with the rank of Captain. He attended Stanford University where he met the love of his life, Frances Beckwith, of Portland. They graduated in 1949 and married in 1950. Palo Alto has been their primary residence ever since. He was a partner in Van Arsdale-Harris Lumber Company in San Francisco for over 50 years.
Dick and Fran enjoyed world travel. Often they would invite along a few of their children and grandchildren. Dick loved spending time with his family. His interests and passions were golf, fishing, hunting, sports games and having a cocktail and cigar with family, friends and golden retrievers. Most of all he loved spending warm summer months at the family vacation home on the Metolius River in Camp Sherman.
His wife Fran says: "Dick was the most loyal and wonderful husband. He will be missed by many."
Dick Hogan is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Frances Hogan, and their five children - John Hogan, Rich Hogan, Jr. and Ted Hogan, all of California, Martha Dale of Camp Sherman and Mary Hogan-Botkin of Idaho. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and two faithful golden retrievers, "Nellie" and "Mildred." He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions are made in Dick's memory to one of his favorite charities. These include the Black Butte School Foundation (Frank Dale Memorial Scholarship Fund) and the Deschutes Basin Land Trust. While a memorial gathering is planned for Saturday, March 15, 2008, in Palo Alto, the family also plans a gathering in Camp Sherman this summer.
