News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws baseball team came out strong in their first game of the season and notched a 13-2 victory over Crook County at home on Wednesday, March 12. The game ended after just five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Sisters had an explosive second inning, pounding in 10 runs. The inning was highlighted by consecutive doubles by Nate Jackson, Tanner Hodges and Jarred Hasskamp. The Outlaws added two runs in the third inning, and Crook County scored their first run in the game. At the close of the third, Sisters held a 12-1 lead.
The Outlaws scored their 13th and final run in the fourth, and Crook County added a run in the fifth.
Taylor Davenport pitched the first three innings for the Outlaws and recorded three strikeouts. Sean Heagney came in to the close the game.
The bats were hot for the Outlaws. Brandon Morgan led the team with three hits, including two doubles and batted in four runs. Aaron Feganbush and Heagney both had doubles, and each scored two RBI (runs batted in). Hasskamp hit a single and a double and scored one RBI. Jackson hit a single and a double and recorded two RBI.
Coach Steve Hodges said: "I was pleased with Taylor's (Davenport) first start of the year. He had good ball control. On offense, we came out and hit the ball well, all solid hits. We swung at good pitches and got good results."
Two days later the Outlaws were on the other end of the scorecard, losing 12-2 at Madras.
Morgan pitched the first two innings for the Outlaws, and Ryan Burbank pitched the final three.
Hodges said: "I wanted all the guys to get innings and to get pitchers some experience. Brandon Morgan (sophomore) had his first varsity start at pitcher and did a good job considering the weather conditions that were very windy and cold."
The Outlaws had three hits in the game with singles from Max Stovall and Davenport. Hodges pounded out a double that tipped off the left fielders glove which resulted in Sisters' two runs in the game.
"Madras is one of the top teams in the IMC, and we faced some of their better pitchers," said Hodges. "They've got a lot of good athletes and some good hitters on their team who were able to put the ball in play."
Sisters will play at Mountain View on Wednesday, March 19, and will host Summit on Thursday.
