News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Elementary School staged its second book fair of the year earlier this month. The week-long event was especially attractive as everything was offered on a "buy one, get one free" basis.
According to elementary school librarian Marie Phillips, the school organizes the March book fair as a means of saying thank-you to parents and community members for all of their support and help with the "for profit" sale the school holds in the fall of every year.
Like the "for profit" sale in the fall, the March book fair helps students connect with books. It effectively embellishes the school's reading curriculum, as well as the one-on-one SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) program for students in grades K-3.
The "for profit" sale in October is a fund-raiser for the fourth grade. The class normally nets about $2,500 from the sale. The March sale, however, is not a moneymaker for the school.
"We always do it (the 'buy one, get one free sale') before spring break, so it's a good opportunity for the kids to get some books to take for spring break or else to start stockpiling books for summer reading," said Phillips.
The books are provided by Scholastic Inc., the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books.
