Outlaws win four straight

The Sisters Outlaws varsity softball team will carry a four-game winning streak into their own tournament Friday when they open play at 10 a.m. against Astoria at Sisters High School.

After losing to visiting Summit 12-0 on March 18, the local squad swept Bend 6-4 and 10-1 and then recorded a pair of 10-run wins over La Pine, 18-2 and 12-2.

The four-straight victories improved the 4A Outlaws to 5-2 on the season, with three wins over upper division schools. The start is the best in school history.

In the 12-0 loss to Summit, the Outlaws committed nine errors and allowed nine runs with two out in the fourth. Only two of the Storm's dozen runs were earned, and Jenna Sneva managed the only hits for the Outlaws.

"But they rebounded nicely and played with a lot more intensity and focus the next day against Bend," said Coach Tom Mauldin. "We only committed three errors in the two games, reacted quickly, bunted well and the bats came alive."

The Outlaws got four hits from Sneva in the 6-4 win, and JJ Ashley drove in three runs. Senior Sam Stoneback scattered five hits and struck out six in picking up the win. In the second game Camille Pedersen homered, doubled and singled, and pitcher Hillary Renz struck out six and scattered four hits in going the distance. She also picked up three hits in the win.

Freshmen Cassie Hernadez had a two-run double. McKenzie Cooper singled, and Zoe Wavryn had two hits. Junior Jenny Kaiser singled twice. Stoneback had a pair of hits, and Brenna Mooney singled home a run.

In defeating La Pine twice the Outlaws batted through the order in each game with nearly every player getting a base hit on the day.

"We had a few mistakes, but the girls were swinging the bats," said assistant coach Mark Bremer, who added that Marisa Calavan, another freshman, doubled.

Stoneback picked up her third win of the season in the first game, and Renz earned the decision in the second game.
