Boys tennis team notches two league wins

The boys tennis team earned a 7-1 victory at Mt. View on Tuesday, April 8 and two days later defeated Bend high 5-3.

In Tuesday's match against Mt. View, the Outlaws swept the competition in the singles matches. Number one singles player Evan Sims went three sets against Ben Fong for the 6-3, 6-2 and 4-1 (coach removed Fong from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct) victory, and Shayma Ellis (No. 2) defeated Masaki Nagayasu 6-4, 6-1. Charlie Phillips (No. 3) earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Josiah Dawley, and Will Newport (No. 4) earned a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over Nathan Fortin.

"This was our first match with our whole singles line-up in place," said Coach Boyd Stuwe. "All four of these players have been with us since the team began three seasons ago. They are all coming into their top form this year, and the tenacity of all four suggests we will see a lot of these singles players sweep this year."

Three of the four doubles teams also earned wins in the contest. Sam and Ben Fullhart (No. 2) defeated Kal Kreiger and John Steigleder 6-4, 6-2.

"The Fullhart brothers played a very strategic doubles match against capable opponents and came away with an impressive win," said Stuwe.

Scott Everson and Colby Gilmore (No. 3) got off to a slow start but got back on track and played two solid sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) to earn the win over Kevin Kyger and Robert Turner.

Erik Sellgren and John Thomas (No. 4) notched a win in three sets with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Two days later the Outlaws notched another league victory over Bend High.

Singles players Phillips (No. 3) and Newport (No. 4) both earned wins for the day. Phillips worked hard from beginning to end and never lost his focus in his 6-2, 6-4 win over Stephen Marguess and led from start to finish in both sets. Newport let down a bit after his 6-3 win over Gabe Corswin in the first set. Corswin took an early lead in the second set, but Newport fought his way back late in the set for a straight sets win (6-4).

Three of the four doubles teams also notched victories in the contest.

Trevor Martel and John Thomas (No. 2) defeated Tyler Asla and Aiden Contreras 6-3, 6-1.

"Trevor and John had our biggest win of the match," said Stuwe, "and it was the first time they've played together. Trevor just joined the team this week but is a very accomplished player with great skills and a tenacious competitive spirit."

Everson and Gilmore (No. 4) won their match against Ren Walkenhurst and Matt Sterling 6-4, 6-1.
