Girls golf team wins two

The girls golf team took first place at the golf tournament held at Kahneeta, on Tuesday, April 8.

The match was originally scheduled for Eagle Crest, but there was too much snow on the course to make a round of golf possible. At Kahneeta players still had to contend with rain, sleet, hail and wind.

Sisters finished with a team score of 349, 31 strokes ahead of runner-up Crook County. Summit placed third (386), Mt. View fourth (413), Hermiston fifth (426), Madras sixth (476), and Seaside finished at 483.

Lindsay Reeve carded an 81 to earn individual medalist honors. Coach Mary Flande said that Reeve turned in a great score considering the conditions and played a very consistent game.

Shelby Ross scored her personal best with an 87 to finish fourth overall. Ross shot a 43/44 and had seven pars in the round. She hit a big putt to par the number 12 hole (par 4).

"I got into trouble right away on hole 12 and drove it into the weeds, but then I hit a good second shot that landed right next to the green," said Ross. "Instead of a good chip shot, I chunked it onto the green and then had to make a 34-foot downhill putt for the par. And I did it!"

Alexis Wainwright carded a 90 for a fifth-place finish and was able to par seven out of the last nine holes. Ocean Powell was one stroke back of Wainwright with a 91 and finished sixth. Meghan Crowder rounded out the scoring with a 107. In non-scoring positions, Claire Mutchler shot a 101 and Emily Rawls turned in a career best round of 93.

A transfer, Powell has noticed a huge difference between the Lady Outlaw golfers and her former golf team.

"The girls here in Sisters are more committed to golf than they were in Eugene," said Powell. "Even when we don't have practice, we're all out on the weekends practicing. In my spare time all I do is golf. I've shaved 10 or 11 strokes off my game since moving here, and I'm striving to get better every day."

Two days later Reeve again earned individual medalist honors with a score of 80, at the Arrowhead Golf Course, in Molalla. Rawls carded a 94, Wainwright a 96 and Claire Mutchler a 98. Crowder shot a 99 and Powell finished with a 103.

Sisters finished with a team score of 368 for the first place finish. Molalla was runner-up at 378, and The Dalles Wahtonka took third a 420. Other team scores were Tillamook (504) and Astoria (594).

The Outlaws travel to Cottage Grove on April 15, and on April 17 Sisters will play at Broken Top in Bend.
