Lady Outlaws clinch league golf title

The girls golf team obliterated their opponents at the Girls' Special District #5 Tournament held at Aspen Lakes on Monday and Tuesday, May 5-6.

Sisters earned first-place honors with a total two-day team score of 700. Two hundred and eleven strokes back at runner up was Cottage Grove (911). Marist took third (1034) and La Pine, Junction City, Creswell, Sweet Home and Elmira all had incomplete teams.

The Lady Outlaws shot a 356 the first day of the tournament and a season best score of 344 on the second day.

Lindsay Reeve was the individual medalist and led the Outlaws with an 88-77 for a two-day total of 162. Ocean Yap-Powell carded an 86 on day one for a personal best and followed with a 90 on day two for a total of 176. Shelby Ross shot a 90-89-179 and Alexis Wainwright carded a 96-88-184. On day one Claire Mutchler shot a 95 and on day two Emily Rawls finished with a 90.

Four of the top five finishers were Outlaws. Reeve claimed first-place honors, Yap-Powell was second, Ross was third and Wainwright was fourth. Fifth place went to Melissa Everhart of Junction City who finished with a two-day total of 191.

Senior Alexis Wainwright said, "Playing in my last district tournament was a lot of fun. I struggled the first day but came back on the second day and shot an 88. I was able to start the second day with a great drive and almost chipped it in for an eagle. I missed by about an inch but finished out the hole with a birdie. I'm looking forward to the state tournament and hope we can bring home another championship."

"We played very well and were consistent as a team both days," said Coach Mary Flande. "I was happy for Lindsay (Reeve). She worked hard in the off season and it was nice to see her improve the second day and repeat as the district champion. Lindsay is a good leader for this team. Ocean also played well and is picking up momentum for the state tournament next week. I was also proud of the way Alexis bounced back the second day and ended with a solid round."

Flande told The Nugget she hopes the two solid rounds at district will be a springboard for the state tournament this week.

Flande offered "a special thanks to Aspen Lakes for letting us host our district tournament there. The Cyrus family has been just awesome to work with."
