Sisters Library set for annual book sale

For book-lovers, the day of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is every bit as greatly anticipated as the day is for quilters. It is the day of the Friends of the Sisters Library (FOSL) Book Sale.

Starting Friday evening at 5 p.m., all members of FOSL can browse the thousands of books donated by Sisters area residents, guests and friends. Then on Saturday, the general public is invited to pick what they want from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The income from the annual book sale, the continuous book sale at the library, memberships and general donations to FOSL add up to a healthy sum of money that the Sisters community puts back into circulation to help the library.

The sale and other efforts fund a variety of programs, from scholarships to library beautification.

The Peg Bermel Scholarship supports a graduating Sisters High School senior each year. Sydney Randall, who graduated from Sisters High this year, is going to use the FOSL dollars she was awarded to go to Portland State University and enroll in anthropology and writing studies.

The library's children's and teen summer reading programs are helped by FOSL funds. The colorful jungle created by the library staff and volunteers was funded through FOSL. Then there's the unique old pine snag in the library children's room, which the FOSL Art Committee commissioned Brent McGregor to sculpt. There is also a new digital projector FOSL purchased, used by COCC Lunch & Learn participants and other Sisters groups in the library community room.

There are various art pieces that FOSL purchased, on display throughout the library including the bronze piece "Little Girl Reading," which is a companion piece to the "Little Boy," donated by the Wood family in memory of their son.

Sisters area residents and quilt show visitors are invited to bring family and friends for a day of buying books, CDs, DVDs and videos - and join the Friends of the Sisters Library. All new and renewing memberships will receive a free FOSL book bag.
