Deadline approaches for council election

In the November 4, 2008 General Election, Sisters city residents will elect three city council members. The terms of Shawna Bell, Brad Boyd, and Lon Kellstrom will expire. All three are eligible to apply for re-election.

According to City Recorder Kathy Nelson, several people have picked up packets, but no one has filed to run - including the three incumbents.

Persons interested in being elected to one of the city council positions must file a "perfected" petition with the City Recorder by 5 p.m., August 26, to be placed on the November 4 General Election ballot.

A perfected petition involves obtaining signatures of at least ten registered voters in the City of Sisters and certifying the same from the Deschutes County Elections Office.

Nelson notes that a candidate cannot wait till the deadline to start the application process because it takes time to perfect the petition.

"Please allow adequate time for the process which includes meeting with the city recorder to receive the official forms necessary to run for office, collecting signatures of registered voters within the City of Sisters and having those signatures certified by the Deschutes County Elections Office," Nelson said.

To be eligible for office a person must be a qualified elector within the meaning of the Oregon State Constitution and a resident of the City of Sisters for one year consecutively.

Of the three persons elected, the two receiving the highest number of votes shall each hold office for four years. The one receiving the third highest number of votes shall hold office for two years.

City of Sisters City Council candidate materials may be picked up at the city recorder's office at City Hall, 520 E. Cascade Ave.
