Rider hosts vaulting clinic at local stables

Black Butte Ranch Stables will be where the action is on Sunday, August 17, when riders will try their hand in a free equestrian vaulting clinic.

Vaulting is an equestrian sport in which the horse is controlled by a lunge line, working in a circle around the handler. The vaulter works on the horse's back, doing gymnastic moves at different gaits.

The clinic will be taught by Laura Herman, whose father, David Herman, owns Equine Management, the company that supplies the horses and staff to the Black Butte Stables. Laura has been vaulting for three years and will bring her mare as the lesson horse.

Laura is offering the clinic for free to the first six interested participants. She is doing it as part of a school community service project. A student at Lincoln High School in Portland, Laura is involved in a program that requires students to plan and execute a service project. Last year she held a basic horsemanship clinic at the stables.

"Vaulting is a good way to learn balance and harmony with the horse," she said. "It's a fun way to be with horses and no experience is necessary."

The day starts at 9 a.m., and will conclude at 3 p.m. with a demonstration of learned skills. Lunch is provided. Participants should wear stretchy long pants and either flexible sneakers or swim shoes. Some shoes will be available to borrow for the day.
