News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The lightning storm that rumbled across Central Oregon started several fires in the Sisters area.
The largest, the #601 fire burning in the Mt. Washington Wilderness, grew to about 45 acres and threw up smoke that occasionally drifted across Highway 20, according to Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch.
A 16-person smokejumper crew is on the fire and a helicopter dropped water on the blaze on Friday and Saturday.
The fire is remote and butted up against terrain burned in last year's GW Fire.
People on the highway east of Sisters had a good view of a smoke plume tossed into the air by the #685 fire, approximately nine miles directly south of Sisters.
That blaze erupted on Saturday, but responded well to initial attack and, according to Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch, there was no fire activity by late Saturday afternoon.
Handcrews, engines, and helicopters suppressed a fire (#678) located approximately eight miles northeast of Sisters in Steven's Canyon. On Saturday the fire, fanned by gusty winds, jumped a containment line in the afternoon and grew from five acres to eight acres.
A helicopter, a 20-person handcrew, a five-person handcrew, three engines and a water tender battled the fire and pushed it into mop-up by Sunday afternoon.
