Cyclists enjoy Oregon Bicycle Ride

Several Sisters cyclists found coveted slots on the annual Oregon Bicycle Ride August 10-16.

"It's basically like Cycle Oregon, only smaller," said Marlene Schneider, who participated in the ride for the first time this year.

The itinerary took riders from Cottage Grove to Reedsport and on to Bandon, where the riders enjoyed a layover day.

Then it was on to Powers and from there to Riddle and into the Umpqua River watershed for a ride into the Millpond BLM Campground.

Spectacular scenery and the camaraderie of the road are the attractions of the ride.

"It's a ride, not a race," Schneider said.

Riders got to know one another and enjoyed making new friends on the 500-mile trek.

There were 10 riders from Sisters: Bev MacDonald; Mike Armstrong; Sue Yocum (with brother John); May Fan; Carol Mooreheard; Elizabeth Renner; Ali Mayea; Ardie Winters; Scott Michalek; Marlene Schneider.

Schneider said that she and Michalek were eager to go on the ride after Yocum told them about it. The felt fortunate to be among the limit of 250 riders.

"It actually sells out really, really fast, so we were lucky to get on," she said.
