News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Folks in Sisters will get a taste of the town's lively arts scene on Saturday, September 20 - literally.
Local art galleries and specialty shops are teaming up with an array of Sisters restaurants to present a visual and culinary feast in the first annual "Taste of Sisters" event.
Clearwater Gallery will host wildlife photographer David Ohlsen and offer appetizers from the award-winning Jen's Garden. Artist Grace Bishko will be featured at High Desert Gallery along with live music and treats from Bronco Billy's Ranch Grill and Saloon.
DonTerra Artworks teams up with Pleiades to showcase Barbara Berry's paintings and the bird paintings of Tom Mital.
Other stops in this new twist on the concept of an art stroll will include Out West Designs, teamed with Sisters Olive and Nut Co .; Ghiglieri Gallery matched with the fine food of The Lodge at Black Butte Ranch; The Jewel teamed with Brand 33 and Navigator News offering art and cuisine from The Lodge at Suttle Lake.
Sisters Art Works will offer art, hospitality and samples from Three Creeks Brewing Co.
Cork Cellars and Sisters Coffee Co. will also offer live music during the event.
Julia Rickards of Clearwater Gallery said that the art scene and dining opportunities have both grown to a point where a Taste of Sisters is possible.
"We couldn't have done this stroll before because we didn't have the restaurants that we do now," she said.
The idea centers around the belief that food and art go together in the same way food and wine are paired - enhancing the overall experience.
"Cuisine is art, too," said Terri Applegarth of DonTerra Artworks. "The chefs we have here are artists."
For gallery operators, there is another advantage to this kind of art stroll. It puts the food offerings in the hands of experts.
"Sometimes a lot of galleries struggle with the hospitality, with the food end of it," Rickards said.
The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce is a co-sponsor of the stroll. The event is starting small and manageable, but both Rickards and Applegarth anticipate that it will grow and become another signature event for Sisters. They hope that the event will bring out local residents for an opportunity to renew their appreciation of their hometown and also attract visitors from other local communities.
The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 20. For more information visit http://www.sisterschamber.com.
