News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
This year for the first time the Kiwanis Club of Sisters awarded a career opportunity grant to a local resident.
The first recipient of the award is Alesha Faris, an employee of Ray's Food Place in Sisters. Faris is employed in the Bakery/Delicatessen department. She is seeking training to become a pastry and cake decorator and will attend a series of classes offered by Michael's of Bend.
Each year the Kiwanis Club presents scholarships to local high school graduates who are college bound. This year 15 $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Sisters High School graduates.
The career opportunity award program is new and it is offered to assist young persons who have recently or within a few years graduated high school, and now would like to receive training in a career that would assist them in their current employment or obtain a job that would pay more than minimum wages.
Applications are still being accepted for the career opportunity grants. Information can be obtained at the Kiwanis House located on the corner of Oak Street and Main Avenue on any Thursday between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by calling Tom Worcester at 549-0803.
