Knights of Columbus to hold fund-raiser

The Sisters Knights of Columbus Roundtable will host a community Oktoberfest event on Saturday, September 27, at The Pines Clubhouse. According to event organizer, John Ries, the annual Oktoberfest is the local Knights' principal fund-raiser for their charitable outreach.

"Last year," Ries said, "the funds raised were used to help a needy family struggling to pay its bills when the husband became seriously ill. Funds were also given to the Kiwanis Food Bank, as well as smaller amounts for acute emergencies of the homeless in our area."

As part of its community focus, the Oktoberfest is open to everyone and will include dinner, music, dancing and a raffle. Top raffle prizes include $125 in golfing credit at Eagle Crest and a $100 credit at Shilo Inns. The dinner will feature a traditional Bavarian menu, including sausage on a roll, German potato salad, sauerkraut, dessert and a choice of beer or soda. A children's hot dog menu will also include tater tots, applesauce, dessert and soda.

The Knights of Columbus organization was founded in 1882 as a fraternity of Catholic men dedicated to providing charitable service and monetary support to their local parishes and the community. The Sisters organization at St. Edward the Martyr parish has about fifteen members who donate their time and physical labor in addition to the financial contributions that will be made possible through this event.

Ries reports that, nationally, 1.6 million members contributed over $110 million and more than 55 million hours of volunteer service for charitable causes during the last year alone.

Adult tickets are $15 at the door, but may be purchased in advance from any Knight for $12. Tickets for ages 6-18 are only $5, and children five and under are free. Advance tickets are available after Mass at St. Edward's and are also available by calling John Ries at 549-2078.

The clubhouse for The Pines at Sisters is at 612 Brooks Camp Rd., at the west end of town.

The event will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 27.
