Thomas E. Shaver

Thomas E. Shaver, age 67, peacefully died at home in Sisters, OR on September 15, 2008, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born September 26, 1940 to Leota and George Shaver in Portland. After graduating from Jefferson High School, Tom studied at Portland State College for two years and then transferred to the University of Oregon's business administration program. There he became a lifelong Duck, supporting Duck Athletics and attending football and basketball games as well as track events for more than 38 years. On June 13, 1964, he married Janet L. Maiwald in Portland.

Tom served in the Coast Guard Reserve for eight years. He began working in the restaurant business as the manager of Pietro's Gold Coast Pizza in Eugene. He then began working for International King's Table Restaurants and helped to open five new restaurants in Arizona in 1973-74. Upon returning to Eugene, he became Director of Training, Regional Supervisor, and Director of Purchasing for King's Table Restaurants. When the restaurant chain was sold in 1989, he joined Morton & Associates in Tualatin and remained there as a food broker until retiring in 2003.

Tom enjoyed golfing, boating, salmon and trout fishing, pheasant hunting, traveling, and snorkeling in Hawaii. He was a member of the U.O. Alumni Association and the Duck Club of Central Oregon. He belonged to the Presbyterian Church.

Tom is survived by his wife; daughter Darcy, son-in-law John Dawson and granddaughter Kathryn of Seattle, WA; sister Susan and her husband John Milne of Redmond, OR; sister Marcia Rezanina of Gresham, OR; and eight nieces and nephews. His parents and a sister, Virginia Lowery, died previously.

At Tom's request, a private family service will be held in Hawaii where his remains will be scattered at sea. Redmond Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
