News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Lady Outlaws soccer team lost 1-0 in their toe-to-toe battle against Marist on Tuesday, September 16, and bounced back two days later with a 7-1 win over Elmira.
In Tuesday's game, the Spartans of Marist scored with nine minutes left in the contest to earn the win.
"We made a small error in judgment and they (Marist) were able to score," said Coach Nik Goertzen. "But, that didn't take the wind out of our sails. We battled hard and played our hearts out. I was very impressed with the girls' attitude, effort and energy."
Goertzen told The Nugget he switched to a different style of play against the Spartans, who were the No. 2 team in the state last year.
"It was absolutely effective," said Goertzen. "We held them at bay and played with them the entire stretch. We executed, managed the clock and controlled the tempo of the game. I think they were surprised at how we played and it frustrated them. I was very proud of the girls today and very happy to be their coach."
Two days later the Outlaws stomped Elmira 7-1.
Marin Allen scored on a breakaway five minutes into the game to get the Outlaws started. Mindy Marr recorded the assist.
Michelle Young scored an unassisted goal right down the middle at the 29-minute mark to give Sisters a 2-0 lead.
Allen scored again six minutes later on a pass from Marr and the Outlaws pushed to a 3-0 advantage.
Amity Calvin made a nice criss-cross to the middle and Marr sent it up and over the keeper's head to finish it. At the half Sisters held a 4-0 lead.
At the 54-minute mark, Young scored her second goal of the game on a shot that landed just to the left of the keeper and the Outlaws went up 5-0.
"At that point I think we thought the game was over and we lost our intensity," said Goertzen. "And then they (Elmira) scored."
One minute later Marr made a beautiful cross to Hattie Tehan who headed it in at the far post. Sisters went up 6-1.
Five minutes later Young received a nice cross from Breezy Tewalt and finished with a hat trick to seal the game.
"Everybody got to play and it was a good win after the tough loss to Marist," said Goertzen.
"It was nice to have a healthy Michelle (Young) back," said Goertzen. "She's another weapon for us. She's got nice touches and finishes around the goal."
Goertzen also noted the fine play of utility player Amity Calvin.
"Amity is pure energy and hustle and is just all over the place when I need her to be," said Goertzen. "She doesn't understand the word quit."
Sisters has an overall record of 3-1 and are 2-1 in league.
The Outlaws will host Creswell on Thursday, September 25.
