Boys soccer team shuts out Junction City

The boys soccer team defeated Junction City 3-0 at home on Tuesday, October 9.

The win puts the Outlaws in third place as they head into the second half of the season.

The Quinn brothers scored all three of Sisters' goals in the contest. Sam Quinn got the Outlaws started with a goal 20 minutes into the game thanks to an assist from Sam Orwig. Sam received the pass on the right side, broke off from his defender and took a powerful shot that went through the keeper's hands.

Ten minutes later, Max Quinn had a breakaway up the middle. He took the ball up the left side and with his left foot crossed it over into the right corner of the net for the goal. Sisters was up 2-0 at the half.

Sisters' final goal came in the 49th minute. Max Quinn beat the defense to score an unassisted goal and seal the Outlaws' win.

Sam Quinn said, "We're a pretty young team this year. We're finally getting to know each other and we're figuring out how to work with each other effectively. We're passing the ball better and are communicating much better."

Coach Rob Jensen told The Nugget that he made some minor adjustments in the midfield and the defense that worked well for the team.

"We're layering the defense more, helping each other out and playing more as a team," said Jensen.

Jensen noted that Lee Elder did a great job playing at the sweeper position for the first time.

"He's timing the ball and cleaning up the defense. He's helping out everywhere," said Jensen.

Jensen also noted the fine play of center midfielders Scott Everson, David Liming and Will Newport who did a great job of shutting down the Tigers' best player, midfielder Surgio Idoa.

"This was a big win for us and has a lot of implications for playoffs," said Jensen. "It also gives us a great bit of confidence going into the second half of the season."

Two days later the Outlaws tied 1-1 with the Billies in a tough battle at Pleasant Hill (PH).

Jensen said, "We dominated play throughout the game but we had 30-plus calls against us and only two for us for direct kicks. That makes it hard."

Sisters scored in the 58th minute on a cross from Max Quinn to Kevin Marquardt but the lead didn't last long. In less than a minute the Billies answered back. PH caught a direct kick from outside the 18-yard mark. The ball deflected off one of the Outlaws players' heads and went into the goal to make the game even at 1-1.

"We've got to make sure we beat Junction City and get a win against Elmira," said Jensen. "And, I'd like to knock off Marist or Cottage Grove in this second round. Our goal is to be in the playoffs and to do that we need for at least a third-place finish."

Sisters is currently in third place behind Marist and Cottage Grove. The Outlaws will take on Marist at home on Tuesday, October 14, and travel to Elmira two days later.
