Daniel Winfield Nordhill, Sr. of Black Butte Ranch passed away Monday in Sisters, with family at his side.
He was born to Daniel and Genevieve Nordhill in Spokane, Washington, where he attended grade schools and Lewis and Clark High School. He received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta.
He spent 34 years with the Army Corps of Engineers, beginning his career in the Portland District in design and flood control and received his professional status in 1951. He transferred to the North Pacific Division and became the Assistant Chief of Planning. In 1982, he received the Department of the Army Decoration for Meritorious Civilian Service.
He was active in the Society of American Military Engineers and the U.S. Committee on Large Dams. He was active in community services, coached Little League for his sons and served on the Black Butte Ranch Fire District Board for six years.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, golf, bridge, travel and listening to classical music. He built two homes and a cabin cruiser.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years; daughter Karen Geers; sons Daniel, Jr. and Kevin; and six grandchildren: Nicole, Gar, Erin Alison, Mike and Chris.
No memorial service is planned. A Celebration of Life will be held at Christmastime.
