Visiting Spartans maul the Outlaws

The Outlaws were crushed 63-30 by the Spartans on Friday, October 17. Sisters had a strong first half, but couldn't maintain the level of play needed to finish strong.

Marist scored on a three-yard run in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

The Outlaws made a 75-yard drive at the start of the second quarter but were stopped on the goal line. The drive was highlighted by a 35-yard run by Chase Kleint. A face mask was called in the play which got Sisters to the 10-yard line. After two plays on fourth and goal, the Outlaws were stopped.

Sisters got a safety with 5:20 left in the half and closed Marist's lead to 7-2.

The Outlaws got the ball back with five minutes left and went on a 15-play drive. Kleint had a 35-yard run which got Sisters to midfield. On a critical third and nine Levi Rowe got a first down. The drive was capped with a three-yard TD pass to Rowe. The drive ate up the remaining minutes on the clock and Sisters ended the half with a 9-7 lead.

"The first half was just incredible," said Coach Dusty Macauley. "We did a nice job executing the game plan, controlled the ball and kept them off the field offensively."

In the second half things got ugly for the Outlaws.

Marist scored 35 unanswered points to start the second half and just minutes into the fourth quarter the Spartans had pushed to a 42-9 lead.

The Outlaws came back and got a drive together. Kleint made a nice throw to Rowe as he came across the middle and Rowe ran 80 yards for the touchdown. Kleint threw to Drew Johnston for the two-point conversion which put the score at 42-17.

Kleint was intercepted on the Outlaws' next possession and the Spartans went up 49-17.

Marist put in the JV squad and with six minutes left on the clock the Spartans scored again to push to a 56-17 advantage.

Sisters scored on their next possession on a five-yard run by Jared Nelson who had 35 yards rushing in the drive. The PAT failed and Sisters trailed 56-23.

With three minutes left on the clock the Outlaws tried an on-side kick. Sisters did not get the ball and the Spartans took possession, threw a deep pass, scored and took a 63-23 lead.

Sisters got the ball back with 2:50 on the clock. The Outlaws battled hard on their next 50-yard drive. Kleint scored Sisters' final touchdown of the night on a four-yard run. The PAT was good and the game ended 63-30.

Marist finished the game with 359 yards of total rushing, compared to Sisters' 272.

Kleint carried the ball 20 times for 111 yards and one touchdown run and threw nine for 21 for 98 yards and two touchdown passes. Kleint also had two interceptions in the game.

Nick Head had 11 carries for 27 yards and Jared Nelson had 10 carries for 30 yards. Levi Rowe finished the night with four catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

"Levi really stepped it up," said Macauley. "He played really well and made some great plays for us on third down."

The defense was highlighted by Max Stovall who had nine tackles and one sack in the game.

"Max played really, really well," said Macauley. "He played a very physical game and in the first half he played the best he could possibly play."

Macauley told The Nugget that Marist has some of the best receivers in the state and the Outlaws did a good job of keeping them contained in the first half.

The Outlaws will travel to Elmira on Friday, October 24, and then wrap up league play at home against Cottage Grove on Friday, October 31.
