News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Lawrence "Larry" Alan Fernandez was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 28, 1945 and remained ever a true Hawaiian at heart. He had been battling a rare form of blood cancer when he passed away on October 25, at home, surrounded by family. He was 63.
Larry moved to Oregon more than a decade ago and soon met his wife Heidi in a checkout line at Walmart. At that time he was working as a glazier on the St. Charles maternity wing - the same wing that his daughter Lani would be born in three years later.
Larry lived out his life in beautiful Camp Sherman, and will be remembered by the entire community as an energetic man full of zest for life and a friend to everyone.
He spent his first years in the Hawaiian Islands before moving to Santa Clara, California, at age seven. Larry was passionate about the outdoors, which he channeled into hunting, fishing, and volunteering with the Camp Sherman Search and Rescue Hasty team.
He enjoyed working with his hands; knives and black powder rifles were among his projects. Though Larry "retired" a few years ago, he never stopped working. He continued to serve as a valued handyman to his community.
Ohana was most important to Larry. He actively maintained close connections with his entire family and spoke with pride of his children and their accomplishments.
Larry's mother, Alice Kekala Kauahi Fernandez, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Heidi and their children Leilani Fernandez, Amber, Micah, Laura, Crystal Leis; father Anthony; siblings Michael (Deb), Bob (Karen), Sibyl Evans (Dan); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry will be remembered by all as the embodiment of the aloha spirit: living, loving and laughing.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Larry will be held on Saturday, November 8, at 1 p.m. at Camp Sherman's Community Hall. Hawaiian attire is welcomed.
To commemorate his love for family, a trust fund for Larry and Heidi's 10-year-old daughter, Leilani Gale Fernandez, has been established at the Bank of the Cascades. Donations to this account would be most appreciated.
