Letters to the Editor 11/05/2008

To the Editor:

This is the copy of a letter I just sent to Governor Kulongoski today to get some action after another crash at Barclay and Highway 20 last night (Tuesday, October 28). I would encourage you to get your readership to start requesting something get done as well from state officials to fix the intersection now to minimize the number of accidents.

Dear Governor Kulongoski:

This is my first time writing to you as a concerned citizen who resides in Sisters.

Last night another accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 20 and Barclay Drive, and that is just one of many, many accidents at this site. 2 families from my church within the last 2 years have suffered serious injuries at that site.

How do we get controls in place NOW (i.e. slower speed, flashing or better yet a stop light) before people get killed? Is that what it will take to get something done?

A large number of the our town's population have had it with the slow process of the Department of Transportation to address this. Please don't just have your staff tell me that they are going through channels to address this. They (ODOT) are not acting on the situation.

Finally, don't mistake this for a token communication - our town deserves to get this addressed and we need your help/guidance on how to get this situation fixed NOW.

Sincerely,

Rob Keranen

To the Editor:

Saturday I was delivered the two huge roll carts, one for yard debris and one for recycling.  On top of the recycle cart it said NO GLASS - NO MOTOR OIL (I certainly understand no motor oil).

In the Dear Customer letter from HCD (High Country Disposal) the paragraph regarding recycling says: "Mixed paper, plastics, tin/aluminum, newspaper, magazines are just a few examples of what can be recycled in your commingle roll cart."

Nowhere does it say NO GLASS.  Most of what I recycle is glass, along with paper and plastic, so now I have to make a trip to the recycle center for the glass.

Is this how the City is giving us "convenient curbside service for residents to recycle" while our garbage rates go up? I know the horse is out of the barn but I'd sure like to hear if the City was aware glass would not be included. Why won't they pick up glass?

Apparently now the recycle center will only be used for glass and motor oil. I did not accept the two huge carts because: 1) if I have to make a trip to the recycle center I might as well take it all; 2) It's winter and I don't have yard debris, and 3) I don't have room in my garage for three huge carts.

It's interesting that in Bend they have a small cart for newspaper/plastic/aluminum and a tub for glass.

To the Editor:

(Re: "Skaters damage Sisters sidewalk," The Nugget, October 22):

I don't appreciate the stereotype. I'm a local skateboarder of Sisters and I took offense to this.

I do understand that skateboarding can damage sidewalks and is a minor annoyance.

We, the skaters, do appreciate the skate park. There are many reasons as to why we skate in town and "so people see us" is not one of them. The skate park is a lot of fun, but it is in a horrible location. It's much easier to skate in town on weekends compared to getting a ride way out of town.

Mr. Leavitt, I have seen the signs outside of your store and it seems like you are just trying to cause trouble and show disrespect. This is entirely wrong.

Skateboarding is a sport and takes years of practice. You might not understand why we would enjoy skateboarding a lot like I don't understand how anyone could enjoy roping up a young steer and dragging it by its legs behind a powerful horse, but I don't condemn you for that.

Respectfully,

Buddy Pickett

We would like to thank the many, many people who sent cards, made phone calls and gave us comfort and support after the loss of our daughter, Kellie. We feel fortunate to be a part of such a caring community.
