News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Sisters Post Office is urging locals to mail now if they want to ensure Christmas delivery.
Overseas mail especially should be mailed immediately.
The post office will not be open on Saturdays before Christmas as it has sometimes been in the past.
"The postal service is watching every penny," said Sisters Postmistress Yvonne Balderson.
Balderson is urging locals to pick up their mail daily, as a heavy inundation of catalogues fills up boxes quickly and interferes with putting up the mail.
"It takes us a lot longer to put up the mail when the boxes are full," she said.
Balderson notes that patrons can avoid long waits by picking their day for mailing.
"Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are not as heavy as Monday and Friday at the window," she said.
Balderson reports that overall mail volume appears to be down as the economy slumps and people cut back on holiday spending.
"It hasn't been as heavy as last year," she said. "I'm thinking people are going to mail less this year."
Balderson and her crew will be moving into the new Sisters Post Office at Larch Street and Barclay Drive after the new year.
"We have to move on a weekend," she said. "I'm thinking either the third or the fourth week of January we'll go in."
