Food program to serve record number of families

Sisters Kiwanis is planning to serve more than 200 families during its holiday Food Share program this month. That's up from 175 last year.

According to Barbara Johnson, program coordinator, more than 180 applications have been received and more are coming in.

"Our last day of being open at the food bank (before Christmas) is December 18," Johnson noted.

The deadline for applications is December 15, but oftentimes families come in on the last open day for the food bank.

"We don't turn anybody away," Johnson said.

The food share program provides a Christmas dinner with all the fixings to qualified families in need. The Furry Friends Pet Food Drive sponsored by The Nugget provides pet food for the same families, while the Sisters-Camp Sherman fire department conducts a toy drive through the Giving Tree at Ray's Food Place.

Johnson said that cash donations are most useful for the food share program.

"Because it's gotten so big, we order everything from Ray's," she explained.

To donate for food items, mail checks to the Kiwanis Food Share Program at P.O. Box 1296, Sisters, Oregon 97759.

Johnson said that the Food Bank is still seeing an increase in use on a weekly basis.

"Every Thursday we are getting new people in because of the way things are," she said.

Donations to the Food Bank are appreciated. They can be made during Food Bank hours on Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Oak Street and Main Avenue. Smaller donations of a few cans and the like may be left at any time.

To donate to the Furry Friends Pet Food Drive, bring dry pet food to The Nugget office at 442 E. Main Ave. Cash donations are welcome and may be mailed to Furry Friends Pet Food Drive, P.O. Box 698, Sisters, OR 97759.

Gifts for children may be provided through the Giving Tree at Ray's Food Place. Donors may choose an ornament listing a child and purchase a desired gift to be delivered to Sisters Fire Hall, where gifts will be wrapped and distributed.
