News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Bike/pedestrian path will finally be a reality

After years of waiting, Sisters will finally have a bike/pedestrian path along Highway 242 from Hood Avenue to Sisters Middle School.

The path was part of an agreement that grew out of the siting of a gravel mining operation near Trout Creek off Highway 242 west of Sisters in 1996. Hap Taylor & Sons - now Knife River - agreed to create the path as part of the approval of the mining operation.

However, the actual building of the path got bogged down for more than a decade in planning discussions and debates over which side of the highway it should run along.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is providing a $100,000 grant for paving the path, which will run on the north side of the highway.

"What Hap Taylor and now Knife River have agreed to is to excavate and lay down 10 feet of gravel," said City of Sisters Public Works Director Brad Grimm. "This contract (from ODOT) comes on top of that. This contract is going to be for the three inches of asphalt... and some drainage rock."

Grimm expects the contract to actually come in around $85,000. The project has already been designed and will go out to bid this winter. Work is expected to begin in spring.
