Girls basketball team snaps losing streak

The Lady Outlaws snapped a six game losing streak with their 41-30 win over Rogue River at home on Friday, December 26.

Sisters took an early 10-0 lead and held the Lady Chieftains scoreless until the three minute mark in the first quarter. Rogue River scored five points from the free throw line and at the close of the period Sisters held a 15-5 lead.

The Outlaws continued their defensive pressure and kept Rogue River (RR) from scoring in the first three minutes of the second quarter. Sisters did not allow the Chieftains a field goal the entire first half. Susie Ruettgers received a beautiful pass from Marin Allen and made a great lay-up at the buzzer and Sisters entered the half with a 23-9 advantage.

Sisters held the lead the entire game and secured their first win of the season.

The Outlaws had great defensive energy throughout the game and were also hitting the bucket on the offensive end.

Coach Kevin Cotner said, "I thought we played better team ball tonight. We were clicking offensively as we worked throughout our sets. Over 90 percent of our shots were inside the paint which is something that we have been stressing. I think we created a lot of energy and turnovers with our press. The girls worked hard and deserved this win."

Points were evenly spread throughout the entire team.

Kiana Jiminez, Chelsie McConville and Danelle Allen led the Outlaws with eight points. Jiminez scored five of her eight points in the first quarter. Marin Allen contributed five points and Nicole Meadors and Brittany Birkeland each scored four.

Cotner told The Nugget that Danelle Allen, back and healthy for the first time since her surgery, made a tremendous impact for the Outlaws.

Susie Ruettgers and Nicole Meadors each had five rebounds for the Outlaws. McConville, Jiminez and Birkeland each pulled down four boards. Marin Allen was scrappy on defense, which earned her seven assists on the night.

Cotner said, "Learning how to win is a crucial step in becoming a great team. We will continue to build on this and continue to work on our game."
