Bluegrass band wows crowd

An enthusiastic crowd of nearly 500 people at Sisters High School greeted the Steep Canyon Rangers on Friday, January 9, in the first of the Sisters Folk Festival's Winter Concert Series.

The band's dazzling set of bluegrass tunes - heavily favoring original band compositions - earned three standing ovations and a pair of encores from the Sisters crowd.

"It was an outstanding start to this year's series," said folk festival board chair Jim Cornelius. "We knew the band was good, but they exceeded our expectations. We hoped we'd draw a good crowd, and the audience exceeded our expectations, too."

"I tell you what," said one concert-goer. "That fiddle player could flat-out rock. You don't hear too many better than that."

This is the third year for the Winter Concert Series, designed to bring the same caliber of entertainment to Sisters in the winter that the festival features in the September event.

"Our Executive Director Brad Tisdel has done a great job of tracking artists and bands that our audience will enjoy and bringing them to town," Cornelius said.

The Sisters Folk Festival Winter Concert Series continues on February 26 with songwriters Jeffrey Foucault and Kris Delmhorst. Legendary Scottish folksinger Dougie MacLean will perform on March 21. For information call 549-4979 or visit http://www.sistersfolkfestival.org.
