Local girls raise funds for Humane Society

When three fourth-graders with a passion for animals get an idea for community service, things begin to happen. Sophie Winter, Remington Slicker and Brooke Knirk pooled their ideas and energy this fall and winter, raising over $250, which they donated to the Redmond Humane Society.

The money was raised in two separate fund-raising efforts. The first one in October for a cash donation. With proceeds from the second in December, the girls bought food for the shelter animals.

They held a rummage sale, manned a lemonade stand and took donations at school after making a presentation there. The sale and lemonade stand were held at the end of Sophie's road, several miles out of town on Wilt Road. The girls were very thankful for their generous neighbors.

Back at school, the girls' teacher, Clay Warburton, supported their efforts by helping them make posters and allowing them to work on the project during free time in the school day. Music teacher Debbie Schlatter lent them equipment for the presentation they made to the other students.

Central Bark of Sisters donated food during the second fund-raiser.

The girls decided to help the Redmond shelter when they heard about the organization's financial difficulties.

"We feel really bad for the animals and want to help," said Sophie.

An additional bonus for the shelter is the girls' willingness to become volunteers there. As long as a parent accompanies them, they are allowed to take the dogs for walks and help them socialize.

More fund-raising efforts are planned for the future. Sophie, Remington and Brooke also welcome other volunteers willing to help the cause.
