News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sam Orwig, German 2 student and senior at Sisters High School, recently became the second Sisters recipient for a full ride to the ASSE Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program to Germany.
Joe Mantecon, graduating class of 2008, was the first student at Sisters High School to receive this prestigious scholarship. After his return to the U.S., Joe visited Sisters High School the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, sharing his fluency in the German language as well as his experiences in Aachen, Germany.
Originally founded by the Swedish Parliament in 1938 to promote youth exchanges between Germany and Sweden, the ASSE program has grown into a worldwide non-profit, high school student exchange program that promotes international understanding. The German-American program is jointly funded by the U.S. Congress, through the U.S. Department of State and the German Bundestag,
Orwig will spend one academic year with a German family and have the opportunity to develop critical intercultural skills while learning what it's like to live and attend school in Germany. Some of his personal goals are to play soccer in Europe and to return speaking German fluently.
"I wanted to see the world after high school and this was the perfect opportunity for me to broaden my horizons and experience a different culture," he said.
