Outlaws golfers swing into season

Sisters boys golf team is off to a roaring start, notching two wins to kick off the season.

The Outlaws were first, out of five teams, at Tokatee on Wednesday, March 18, and one day later took top honors in a 10-team contest at Crooked River Ranch.

At Tokatee, Sisters shot 329 for the top spot, followed by Marist, who finished at 356. Junction City scored 363 for third, Cottage Grove shot 411 for fourth and La Pine was fifth at 441.

Jonathan Standen and Cody Farr-Baenziger were co-medalists for the tournament with individual scores of 78.

Elio Keller carded an 86, Jeff Fought an 87 and Aaron Simundson rounded out the scores at 99.

"It was a solid effort from all the guys," said Coach Jeff Barton. "They all played excellent for their first match of the season. The course was in excellent condition but the greens were very fast which made it a bit difficult for us."

The following day the Outlaws lowered their score to 309 for a first-place finish at Crooked River. Summit was runner-up with 312 and Crook County finished third with 319. Remaining scores were: Redmond JV (343), Mountain View (346), Burns (353), Madras (354), Bend (400), Sweet Home (402) and La Pine (446).

Cody Farr-Baenziger shot a 73 to earn honors as tournament medalist.

"Cody played solid and consistent golf," said Barton. "Cody plays this course a lot and he knows it. He had a good front side and was two under at the turn."

Elio Keller and Aaron Simundson both shot a 78, Jonathan Standen an 80 and Jeff Fought finished with an 85.

"We're getting solid play from everyone," Braton said. "It's nice we don't have to depend on just four kids. Everyone has improved from last year, especially Aaron (Simundson) and Jonathan (Standen). Their ball striking is better and as the season goes on it will improve even more. We've got pretty high expectations now that the guys have shown what they can do. And, Elio (foreign exchange student from Switzerland) has been a nice addition to the team. He fits right in and brings a certain maturity to the game. He's played a lot of golf and knows the rules better than anyone else."

Next up for the Outlaws will be a match at the Arrowhead Golf Course, in Molalla, on Thursday, April 2.
