Sisters will celebrate its Western heritage with a Ranch Life and Rodeo Show on May 30. The event is the centerpiece of a month-long celebration of Western art that runs May 25 to June 30 at Sisters Art Works, 204 W. Adams Ave. in Sisters.
During that month, the Sisters Art Works Entry Gallery will feature art ranging from fine photography to rustic furniture, paintings and sculpture. The art show is free to the public.
There will be a full day of Western exhibits and entertainment on Saturday, May 30. An artist reception will begin at 10 a.m. with artists and craftsmen in attendance.
Cowgirls of the West, a living history group, will depict Western life, along with Jill Stanford, author of "The Cowgirl Cookbook," who will also provide food samples. At noon, J. Chester Armstrong will do a demonstration of his chainsaw sculpture. At 2 p.m., Jeff Wester, of Ponderosa Forge, will demonstrate his blacksmithing skills and horseshoe technique.
Music will be provided by Brad Tisdel and cowboy songster and poet Dyrk Godby.
At 4 p.m. the Deschutes County Historic Society's Stagecoach will end it's two-day trip with the Sisters Art Works building as its final stage stop. Chuckwagon food and cowboy coffee will be available to purchase all day.
For Saturday evening, Charley Engel, host of 106.7 KPOV's radio show "Calling All Cowboys," has wrangled a fine group of cowboy poets and musicians including: The Anvil Blasters; Rick Steber; John Grant and the Western Revue; Don Worthing; and Big Pine and Pitchtones.
The music starts at 6 p.m. There is a $10 suggested donation at the door.
The art show features photography by Hadley McCann, Debra Hollern and Clay Maier. Also featured are paintings by Victoria Shuck, Dyrk Godby and Dennis McGregor; sculpture by J. Chester Armstrong; custom rustic furniture by Rad Jimenez; and custom cowboy hats by Gene Baldwin. Included in the show are custom chaps and chinks by Marianne Fellner of Stellar Ranch and vintage Western fashions from Cowgirls and Indians and historic photos of the Sisters Rodeo.
