Stargazers will explore Sisters' skies

In order to promote a heightened interest in astronomy within the Sisters community, Sisters High School, the Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD), and local astronomy enthusiasts will once again conduct observing sessions of the night sky on selected dates from April through October of 2009.

If you have ever been awed by the beauty of seemingly innumerable stars shining overhead on a clear, moonless night here in Central Oregon, and wanted to know more about what's up there, consider attending some of these star parties.

They will be held on the soccer field behind Sisters High School, northwest of the main building. Experienced amateur astronomers will be there to help guide you through the celestial realm.

Telescopes will be made available for close-up views. If you have a pair of binoculars, by all means, bring them with you. They may reveal things you've never seen before.

Even summer nights in Central Oregon can be cold, so dress warmly. Carry a small flashlight to help find your way through the dark, but please turn it off when you reach the observing site.

These observing opportunities are open to everyone and there is no charge.

The first event is scheduled for April 24. For further information about this and future sessions, look in the Announcements section of The Nugget.
