News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The beleaguered Sisters Park & Recreation District desperately needs a jolt of fresh energy, new ideas and strong leadership.
Fortunately, there are several Sisters community members willing to step up as directors of the district and chart a new course as the organization weathers tough financial times.
Andrew Gorayeb, who is running unopposed, brings passion and vision to the board, along with business experience that will serve the district well. Mike Morgan, who has been a significant financial contributor to the organization, brings a background in organizational reform, tenacity and a willingness to challenge the status quo.
Two races are contested. Between Bill Rexford and Peggy Tehan, Rexford should get the nod. Tehan has served the district for a long time, bringing her expertise as an accountant to bear on the organizations behalf. But with the district floundering and its future uncertain, new energy is essential. Rexford is a proven leader who can repair the district's frayed relationship with the Sisters School District.
Both Jeff Campbell and Marcus Peck should be on the board. Unfortunately, voters are being asked to chose between them. Both men are able individuals with valuable experience to bring to bear on turning SPRD around. Voters will do well with either pick.
We give a slight nod to Peck because his connections with the community and his commitment to bringing volunteers on board will be critical to the district's recovery.
If another position opens on the board, Campbell should be first to be tapped so that the benefits of both men's expertise and background can be brought to bear.
Bonnie Malone, who is running unopposed, has devoted heart and soul to SPRD for many years. Hopefully, her passion for the organization will be rewarded with a quick turnaround of the district's fortunes and an enhanced and vital role for SPRD in the Sisters community.
